What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR is a smart-contract network that splits state and transaction processing across shards while presenting applications with a unified environment. NEAR pays gas and storage costs and is staked with validators that produce chunks and blocks.
Protocol fees are burned, while validators receive newly issued rewards and contracts can receive a portion of gas. The result is not automatically deflationary: net supply depends on the relationship between governance-set issuance and actual fee burn, as well as unlocks and treasury distributions.
Sharding does not create independent NEAR coins or separate user-facing chains; shards contribute to one protocol state and security model.
