What is Ethereum?
Ether is the native asset of Ethereum, a programmable settlement layer for smart contracts. ETH pays transaction fees, is posted by validators to secure consensus, and is used as collateral throughout applications built on the network.
ETH supply is not governed by a hard cap. New ETH is issued to validators, while the base portion of transaction fees is burned, so net supply can expand or contract depending on network use and issuance.
Ethereum’s move to proof of stake did not make transactions free; capacity, demand and rollup use still determine user costs.
